BOX OFFICE: 'The Force Awakens' Closes In On 'Avatars' Record, 'Daddy's Home' Stays Strong

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will pass Avatar by Monday afternoon at the domestic box office to become the all-time domestic box office champion. The film just had another incredible weekend by having the biggest New Years' Eve Box Office Weekend of all-time bringing in another $88.3 million, taking its total domestic gross to around $740.4 million. Avatar sits at $760.5 million. The Force Awakens should have no problem hauling in another $20 million by late Monday afternoon.

Taking second place for the second weekend in a row is the Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg comedy Daddy's Home bringing in another estimated $29 million. After just two weekends at the box office the filmed has earned an impressive $93.7 million competing against Star Wars.

Moving up to third place this weekend after receiving a wide release is Quentin Tarantino's eighth film The Hateful Eight earning an estimated $16.2 million. The film has now grossed around $29.6 million domestically since debuting in a limited number of 70mm theaters over Christmas.

Universal's Sisters movie starring Tiny Fey and Amy Poehlar continued its strong performance at the box office coming in fourth place with an estimated $12.6 million. The film has now made $61.7 million domestically after three weeks of release.

Finally rounding out the top five is Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip bringing in another $11.8 million. The kid's film has now made around $67.4 million domestically.
