Top 10 Superhero Moments Of 2015

By Aric Sweeny

2015 was a year full of super-powered movies and TV shows. Whether you prefer the darkness of Jessica Jones or the lighthearted tone of Supergirl, there truly was something for everyone. With that in mind, join me as I count down my 10 favorite superhero moments of the year.

Honorable Mentions:
"Avengers: Age of Ultron"
“Legends of Tomorrow” Trailer
“X-Men Apocalypse” Trailer

10. Ant-Man vs. Yellowjacket.

Climactic set pieces are common in the superhero film genre, and can frequently get cliche and boring. Ant Man, however, used the shrinking effect of the two characters to great use. One moment it would look as though they were in the middle of an intense brawl on a train. When the camera panned out, it showed how small of a scale their fight truly was. After coming off of  the world ending dilemma that was “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, the small scale worked to an advantage.

9. The “Supergirl” Pilot Episode

Regardless of how good the show is, it’s great to see more female characters getting the spotlight in 2015. Melissa Benoist played the character marvelously, and the ratings were stellar.

8. Spider-Man Joins the MCU

Although I liked the universe Spidey was already in, there is no doubt that it will be great to see a brand new, teenage Peter Parker interacting with personalities such as Iron Man and Thor. Tom Holland’s casting also helped put this at #8 on my list.

7. The First Image of Jared Leto as The Joker

Jared Leto is the perfect pick to play Joker. He’s a wacky person in real life, and has some serious acting chops. After the official announcement of his casting, the internet immediately began speculating as to what kind of Joker we’d be seeing. Then, the image dropped. Right then I knew we were getting something that we’d never seen before: a truly psychotic and scary Joker.

6. “Captain America: Civil War” Trailer

I’ll admit it; after Age of Ultron and Ant Man, I was losing some interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movies weren’t bad, they just didn’t show me anything I hadn’t seen before. Then, the Civil War trailer dropped on Jimmy Kimmel, and my excitement was brought back. Such a well crafted trailer that flowed so smoothly, it’s hard to not get excited about seeing Captain America vs. Iron Man on the big screen.

5. “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” Comic-Con Trailer

This trailer does justice to its name. We got some amazing new action shots of Batman and Superman, along with cool shots of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. What more needs to be said?

4.  “Batman: Arkham Knight”

This game brought us a truly amazing Batman story. Not only did the story intrigue me more than any of the other Arkham games managed to, it succeeded in giving us a good game based around its story. The combat, music, just everything about this game made it memorable.

3.“Suicide Squad” Trailer

We got a good look at every new character, including a shot of Batman on top of the badass new ‘Joker-mobile’.  Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn looks incredible, as does just about every character in the film. As you’ve likely noticed, my whole reasoning behind this being my #3 has been relating to characters. That was intentional. I believe this film is going to be a dark and twisted character piece focusing on baddies of the DC Cinematic Universe, as a Suicide Squad movie should be. From what I can see, David Ayer is handling this properly with care, and will knock it out of the park. Oh, and did I mention how deranged Leto’s Joker looks?

2. “Jessica Jones” and “Daredevil”

Although I prefered Daredevil to JJ, both were terrific shows that brought a new vibe to the MCU. Marvel dropped the lighthearted tone to give us two shows that are just about as adult and mature as it gets. Not only did these shows give us a look at street-level action in the MCU, they also gave us two of the three best villains in the cinematic universe: Killgrave and Wilson Fisk. Fisk was that physically intimidating foe, while Killgrave was terrifying in psychological ways. All this AND we get introduced to Luke Cage? Yeah, these shows are incredible.

1. “The Flash” Season 2

In Season 1 of The Flash, we got a menacing villain named Reverse Flash. He, like Barry Allen, was a speedster in constant search of more speed. When I heard about Zoom being the Season 2 villain, it really underwhelmed me. “Another speedster?” I thought. And, while yes, we did get another speedster, we also got one of the most badass villains to ever grace the small screen. Not only is Zoom terrifying, but he’s also severely more powerful than The Flash.  Zoom isn’t the only reason Season 2 is great, though. In Season 2, they just seemed to have fixed all the mistakes that Season 1 gave us. Iris finally has a role on the show, Barry and Patty have great chemistry, Cisco is constantly throwing around hysterical one-liners, and, as always, the performances are all top notch. Throw in the mystery surrounding Zoom and Harrison Wells, this is deservedly #1 on my list.
