'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Sets New Christmas Day Record
By Matt O'Bryant
Star Wars: The Force Awakens continued its dominance at the box office on Christmas Day bringing in a huge $49.3 million. That number sets a new all-time record for Christmas Day, surpassing the previous record of $27 million held by Sherlock Holmes. The film is expected to have another huge weekend with estimates between $150 million to $190 for the three day holiday weekend.
With that amount The Force Awakens has now surpassed the $400 million mark domestically with a total of around $440.4 million and will probably zoom close to $600 million domestically by the end of the weekend. Being the fastest film in history to do so.
The film has also amassed more than $890 million globally, and will cross the $1 billion mark at a record pace by Sunday afternoon. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will continue to break records for the foreseeable future, since there isn't any real competition until Kung Fu Panda 3 hits theaters in late January.
