What's up guys and gals,
Welcome back to our Weekend Box Office Report here @ECMG!
Taking the top spot this weekend at the box office was Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. The sequel took the number one spot with $30.3 million. The film fell just short of its predecessor which took in $32.5 million on the same weekend last year.
Johnny Depp is back and in "rare form" as real-life Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger in Black Mass which took second place with $23.4 million this weekend. The film is currently Johnny Depp's best reviewed film (77% positive reviews on RottenTomatoes) in nearly a decade, since Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street back in 2007.
Speaking of comebacks, M. Night Shyamalan is making one as well with his newest effort The Visit coming in third place in its second weekend bringing in $11.3 million ($42.3 million so far). The film is a huge win for M. Night who has struggled over the past few years with critics and audiences alike. M. Night produced the entire film himself for just $5 million and then convinced Blumhouse Productions to distribute it. At this point the film has made almost 10 times its budget domestically.
Coming in fourth place this weekend is the erotic thriller The Perfect Guy also in its second weekend of release bringing in $9.7 million ($41.4 million total).
Rounding out the top five this weekend in what was a bit of a surprise, Everest took the fifth spot with $7.6 million. The film opened in limited release (550 3-D/IMAX Theaters) this weekend while all other films in the top five are playing in over 2000 or 3000 theaters across the country. The film opens nationwide next weekend and may turn out to be a huge hit. The film currently has a 73% approval rating on RottenTomatoes and boost a huge All-Star cast featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Keira Knightley, and Jason Clarke.
The only other wide release film of note is the faith-based thriller Captive starring David Oyelowo and Kate Mara. The film brought in just $1.4 million for the 3-day weekend taking the eleventh place spot at the box office.
