Box Office: 'Minions' Takes The Top Spot, While 'Jurassic World' Holds On To 2nd Place!!
By Matt O'Bryant
Welcome back to our Box Office Weekend report here at ECMG.
Universal's highly anticipated animated spin-off Minions took the top spot at the box office this weekend. The film brought in a huge $115.2 million scoring the second largest opening weekend for an animated film ever behind only Shrek the Third's $121.6 million back in 2007.
Coming in second place this week was Universal's other little movie called Jurassic World, maybe you've heard of it? The film took in another $18.1 million this weekend taking its massive total domestic box office to a ridiculous $590.7 million in just 31 days of release. The film is now only $9.34 million away from being only the fourth film in history to make over $600 million domestically!
Disney Pixar's Inside Out fell to third place this weekend bringing in another $17.1 million. The film has now made a very impressive $283.6 million domestically after just 24 days at the box office. In fourth place this weekend was Paramount's highly disappointing Terminator sequel/reboot Terminator Genisys bringing in only $13.7 million in its second weekend of release! The film has now grossed only $68.72 million after 12 days of release. The film will be lucky to reach the $100 million milestone, due to such heavy competition over the next few weeks.
Finally rounding out the top five is The Gallows bringing in just $10 million in its opening weekend. As usual for a Blumhouse Production $10 million is not bad for such a low budget production. Blumhouse Productions usually produces their horror flicks with a budget of less than 10 million. Which means the film has already made back its cost and the studio is sitting pretty good right now.
Well that's it for this edition of ECMG's Box Office Weekend Update!
