DreamWorks Animation's 'Home' And Will Ferrell's 'Get Hard' Top The Box Office Weekend!!
By Matt O'Bryant
Welcome Back to the Box Office Weekend Update, hitting theaters this weekend was Dreamworks Animation's latest family film Home, starring Jim Parsons, Steve Martin, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez. The family friendly film scored a very impressive estimated $54 million. Kind of a surprise considering its an unknown property and not a sequel. Also Home did not hit 'home' with critics scoring a low 32% on RottenTomatoes.com, but audiences seemed to like it a lot giving it an amazing A on CinemaScore.
Coming in second place this weekend was the much buzzed about R-rated comedy Get Hard bringing in an estimated $34.6 million. The film stars Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart in which Ferrell enlist Hart's help to survive his stay in a federal prison. Critics also destroyed this film too with another 32% rating on RottenTomatoes.com, but once again audiences saved it with a B grade on CinemaScore.
In its second week of release The Divergent Series: Insurgent dropped down two spots to third place with an estimated $22 million bringing its domestic total after two weekends at the box office to $86.4 million.
Rounding out the top five at the box office this weekend is Disney's live-action re-telling of Cinderella falling to fourth place, but adding another estimated $17.5 million to its domestic total of $150 million. Finally coming in fifth place is the highly praised horror film It Follows scaring up an estimated $4 million since expanding from just a few theaters last week to 1,218 locations this weekend. The low budget horror film is doing really well considering at the cost to make the film and it will continue to expand into more theaters in the coming weeks.
