5. Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker
Do we even need to explain this one. Some of you are probably surprised that it isn’t higher on the list. Perhaps it actually is, but following the undeniable failure that was Solo: A Star Wars Story. We have to be a little hesitant.
With our extreme love of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi (Minus that awful Canto Bite story-line), plus J.J. Abrams once again at the helm, this one is sure to have us anxious as hell come this December. What will the big twist be? Who is Rey’s parents? Can Kylo Ren actually be redeemed? Will Anakin Skywalker return? Has Darth Sidious been controlling everything behind the scenes this entire time? Will we finally see Luke Skwalker kicking ass in his prime via a flashback scene? I’m really hoping on that last one.
4. The Irishman
One of the greatest filmmakers of all-time, Martin Scorsese teams up the “big three”, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino in a sprawling gangster epic, set through several decades in American history. Based on the novel “I Heard You Paint Houses”, by Charles Brandt, with the script being penned by screenwriter Steve Zaillian. The story follows storied mob hitman, Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, reputed to have carried out more than 25 murders over the course of several decades. Al Pacino will portray infamously slain labor leader Jimmy Hoffa in what will mark the Academy Award winner’s first time working with Scorsese. In getting the “big three” together for the first time, Scorsese and De Niro had to convince the legend, Joe Pesci to come out of retirement for one last ride. We can’t wait for this one folks!
3. Joker/IT: Chapter Two (Tied)
Two clowns, one as much evil as the other? Is there truly one that is scarier than the other? One a sequel to one of the best coming-age-films/horror films in years. Perhaps the best Stephen King adaptation we’ve ever seen, and now, the second part of director Andy Muschietti’s master work. The other, an original adaptation to one of the most storied comic book villains of all-time, The Joker. Writer and director Todd Phillips takes on this unique tell of Batman’s arch nemesis, with one of the greatest actors of our day, Joaquin Phoenix taking on the role of the legendary crown prince of crime. This one, no matter how it turns out will most likely have comic book fans and film fans alike arguing for years to come. Will they live up to the hype?
2. Ford Vs. Ferrari
One of our personal favorite directors of all time, James Mangold, director of Logan, Copland, 3:10 To Yuma, helms what could be one of the year’s very best, Ford v. Ferrari. The film is based on the true story of visionary Carroll Shelby and British driver Ken Miles, who are sent by Henry Ford II and Lee Iacocca with the mission of building from scratch an entirely new automobile with the potential to finally defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France. Starring Matt Damon as Shelby, Christian Bale as Miles, with Tracy Letts as Henry Ford II, plus an ensemble cast including Jon Bernthal, Caitriona Balfe, Josh Lucas, Noah Jupe, JJ Feild, Ray McKinnon, and Remo Girone as Enzo Ferrari. Can you say, another oscar nomination for Christian Bale? Maybe Jon Bernthal can finally get some much deserved awards consideration. If you like Americana, If you like cars, if you like great filmmaking. This is one to look out for, come this Fall.
