Ballerina, the female-centric John Wick spin off, finds it’s director!
Lionsgate has set Len Wiseman to direct Ballerina, an action spinoff of the lucrative John Wick franchise.
Ballerina focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Shay Hatten is set to write, who also penned John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
The female character was glimpsed in the last John Wick film and it isn’t clear at this point whether Reeves will be in the film, though if he does it will most likely be only a cameo. Unity Phelan plays the character Ballerina in Parabellum but has not been attached to the new project as of yet.
The film takes center stage even as Lionsgate ramps up John Wick 4. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum has generated more than $323 million worldwide at the box office. In home entertainment, it is the highest-grossing home entertainment title Lionsgate has released in more than five years.
Wiseman came into his own as a director with another female-driven action franchise, the vampire/werewolf Underworld series. Most recently he directed the first two episodes of Swamp Thing (RIP as Swamp Thing was cancelled even amid rave reviews due to financial reasons) which are worth the watch if you have the DC Streaming platform.
