Deadline is reporting today that District 9, Elysium, and Chappie filmmaker Neill Blomkamp will be helming a brand new sequel/reboot/reinvisioning of RoboCop. Surprisingly and seemingly officially titled, RoboCop Returns.
Original RoboCop writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing and executive producing. Justin Rhodes, who wrote the upcoming Terminator film, will re-write an older script from Neumeier and Miner. Neumeier actually teased the new film back in January, when he said this:
“There’s been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie. In my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old school thing.”
This whole project sounds really cool and interesting and at this point, and I'm particularly thrilled to see Blomkamp's signature work back up on the big-screen. As it's been several years since the divisive Chappie came out and sidelined Blomkamp's once promising career.
Much like David Gordon Green and Danny McBride's Halloween film coming out later this year being a direct sequel to John Carpenter's original Halloween, Blomkamp's RoboCop Returns will be a direct sequel to Paul Verhoevens seminal classic, RoboCop as well. So expect everything that happen in the sub par sequels to be thrown out the window.
Here's the badass 80s style throwback tagline for the new film, “anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.”
While there's no mention in the report, given Blomkamp's style and track record, prepare for this film to be balls to the wall R-rated action violence!
The film does not yet have a release date.
