The long time rumored Obi Wan Kenobi spin-off film set to star Ewen McGregor as the titular hero is back in the news as of a few weeks ago following the still unconfirmed report that it will definitely be Disney and Lucasfilm's next big-screen Star Wars project.
Now, as of this morning, reports are all over the internet revealing that director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader) is seemingly confirmed to be helming the highly anticipated spin-off. On top of that the media news outlets have revealed the film will be set closer to the timeline of A New Hope and obviously further away from the much maligned prequels.
Here's the short but very sweet details leaked about the plot from several major outlets earlier this morning.
“Obi-Wan is on Tatooine being an elusive hermit and stuff, but secretly watches over an infant Luke Skywalker, whom he delivered to his uncle, Owen. Tensions between the local farmers and a tribe of Sand People — headed by a ruthless war chief — eventually brings Obi outta hiding … and into Jedi kickass mode.”
While these details are pretty obvious to any hardcore Star Wars fan, it's still pretty cool to finally start getting some interesting details about the Obi Wan spin-off film that has been rumored for such a long time. Even more interesting, is the simple fact that such an acclaimed filmmaker like Stephen Daldry will be engineering a freaking Star Wars film! Could there be a best director academy award nomination for this film in the future? Perhaps a best actor nomination for Ewen McGregor for Old Ben performance? We sure hope so!
While nothing is official yet, expect the Obi Wan film to hit theaters sometime in 2020, as that's the year after epsiode IX. Where Lucasfilm's slate is currently clear of all Star Wars feature films.
