Winter's Bone helmer, Debra Granik returns to the director's chair eight years since her breakout directorial debut, Winter's Bone. Which also launched the incredible career of Jennifer Lawrence. Now, Granik returns with her next directorial effort, Leave No Trace. The survival drama stars none other than our favorite actor working today, the great Ben Foster (Hell or HighWater, Alpha Dog, The Messenger, Hostiles, 3:10 to Yuma). The film also stars newcomer, Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie. Damn! This film looks amazing, and I absolutely can't wait to see it. Anything with Ben Foster and I'm all in nowadays.
The film is being released by Bleecker Street and is Based on a novel by Peter Rock (and adapted by Granik and Anne Rossellini), Leave No Trace certainly fits squarely in Granik’s wheelhouse as a filmmaker, allowing us the opportunity to live among characters we rarely see portrayed on screen and settle into their way of life long enough to truly consider what that lifestyle might feel like. Working with her regular cinematographer Michael McDonough, Granik takes us into places where light and shadow work differently and there’s a lush quality to their forest settings that certainly make it seem more lovely and homey than another other location in the film.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Will (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland, Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social services. After clashing with their new surroundings, Will and Tom set off on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland.
Leave No Trace is set to hit theaters on June 29th, 2018.
