After making history as the first African American woman to helm a $100 million-plus live action film in Disney's A Wrinkle In Time. Things have not turned out as good as DuVernay's team and Disney would have liked, as the highly anticipated adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time opened well below expectations. With critics and audiences panning the film as "a mess of a wanna be blockbuster." Having barely made $50 million worldwide at this point and when you add in the additional marketing cost, the film will be lucky to break even for the studio.
Should this deal go through with Warner Bros. and DC Films, Ava DuVernay would be once again stepping into big-time blockbuster territory, with the budget for a movie like New Gods potentially being in the $150 Million to $200 million range. While DuVernay's had undeniable success with smaller films like Selma, jumping into the superhero genre game with a studio like Warner Bros. could be a huge mis-step for her career, especially after A Wrinkle In Times short comings. Warner Bros. just doesn't seem to have a clue on how to develop or use the directors they hire for their DC Film properties.
Right now, I personally don't trust Warner Bros. to do anything "the right way" with DC Films and their ever failing cinematic universe. Wonder Woman's overrated success aside, Justice League is one of the biggest failures critically and financially we've ever seen. Hiring DuVernay at this point for a project that on paper should be one of the biggest comic book movies ever made, just seems ludacris. I would much rather see DuVernay use her incredible talents on another project with a different studio.
All that being said, I'm a huge fan of DC Comics and past DC Films. Watching the recent downfall of the DC Cinematic Universe was very painful for me personally. I only hope that Warner Bros. and DC Films can right the ship. Maybe, Shazam!, Wonder Woman 2, and The New Gods can be a turning point in the right direction.
"The New Gods, the creation of revered comic book impresario Jack Kirby, was the Genesis of the uber-villain Darkseid. Also called “Fourth World,” the Kirby creation debuted in a trilogy of related comics written and drawn by Kirby that were published in the very early 1970s: New Gods, Forever People and Mister Miracle. The New Gods came into existence after the world of the gods of classic mythology were destroyed during Ragnarok. The deities inhabit two planets: one is New Genesis, a lush paradise, and the other Apokolips, which sounds like Dante’s version of hell. War ensues."
It'll be very interesting to see how this project evolves, will it be connected to the DC Cinematic Universe? Could it be its own thing? Set apart from the rest? That would be for the best in my opinion. We'll just have to wait and see.
