According to Variety's Justin Kroll, acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play the legendary DC Comics villain, the Clown Prince of Crime, The Joker! This Joker will not be part of the greater DC cinematic universe, but instead will be a stand-alone film helmed by director Todd Phillips. The film has also been reported as a "Joker origin film," and will be produced by none other than Martin Scorsese. No word on how much influence Scorsese will have on the project. Screenwriter Scott Silver is co-writing the script with Phillips.
While nothing has been cemented in stone, according to Kroll, Phoenix has agreed to the role for sure, but negotiations are not yet underway, so anything could happen. However, Phillips has made it clear that Phoenix is the top choice to star and that himself and Phillips met before the new year is just waiting for Warner Bros. go ahead.
The film will be part of the yet-to-be-announced "new banner of DC Comics films." Which means it will not have anything to do with Jared Leto's Joker and Leto will continuing playing his version of the Joker in the DC Cinematic universe. The new banner will use the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles a la 20th Century Fox's Wolverine film, Logan.
Todd Phillips Joker film does not yet have an official release date.
