Long-time X-Men film producer Simon Kinberg has been confirmed to make his directorial debut with next year's X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The film will continue the long-running X-Men saga of films which director Bryan Singer started way back in the 2000 with the original X-Men and will be a direct sequel to last year's underwhelming X-Men: Apocalypse.
According to Deadline, "Fox has formalized plans for Dark Phoenix, the next installment of the X-Men franchise. This all just happened, but they’ve formalized Simon Kinberg as director. Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, and Kodi Smit-McPhee are all reprising when production begins in Montreal."
Along with Kinberg's announcement, an official release date has also been announced which will see the film hitting theaters next Fall on November 2nd, 2018.
Even though this will mark his directorial debut, Kinberg is no newbie to big-screen film-making and obviously Fox believes in his skill set to craft a quality film. Honestly, you don't just give someone a 100 to 200 million dollar picture for the hell of it.
So I'm really excited following this news and look forward to the biggest X-Men year ever at the multiplexes in 2018. With three features films starting with New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and now X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
