Following the awesome new images Marvel released earlier today from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 via Empire, legendary actor Kurt Russell has now opened up in a new interview with Empire about playing the character known as Ego the Living Planet. Director James Gunn also chimes in with some of his thoughts on Ego the Living Planet as well.
Here's a breakdown of the interview via Heroichollywood followed afterwards with our thoughts on Kurt Russell's comments.
In an interview with Empire, Russell dished on his character which he says is his biggest role in his career yet:
“I’ve never played anybody bigger! I’ve never played a character with broader possibilities, I’ll say that.”
Russell hadn’t seen Guardians of the Galaxy when he was first approached for the role but he explained that he understood quickly into the film why Marvel wanted him to play Ego:
“Fifteen minutes in, I said, ‘I think I see why they’re coming to me.’ The baggage I bring from some of the movies I’ve done is the right kind of baggage to bring into this one.”
Returning director James Gunn also said that he started writing Ego with Russell specifically in mind for the role:
“I started writing for Kurt as I was finishing the screenplay. I would have been really disappointed if he’d said no.”
Gunn also added that the visual effect to bring Ego’s powers to life is the biggest visual effect in history. It was recently revealed that the character remains true to his comic book incarnation but that he is also able to manifest himself in several other ways.
“We have over a trillion polygons on Ego’s planet,” says Gunn proudly. “It’s the biggest visual effect of all time. There’s nothing even close to it. Which is cool.”
Seeing Ego the Living Planet on the big-screen for the first time is going to be something very special and the way Russell and Gunn describe it sound freaking mind blowing. Our anticipation level at this point is out of this world and May 5th can't get here fast enough.
