Entertainment Weekly has unveiled their latest issue revealing our first look at writer, director, and producer Simon Kinberg's directorial debut, X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Until now, very little has been known about the upcoming film besides what the title of the film suggest. Along with some cool first look images, we've also got some pretty awesome plot details along with some comments from Kinberg and some of the cast.
It appears that this film will be set roughly ten years after the events in Apocalypse in 1992. The film is said to open with the X-Men in unfamiliar territory as national heroes. With James MacAvoy's Charles Xavier on the cover of Time magazine, with his newfound inflated ego he starts sending the team on more dangerous missions.
One of these dangerous missions sees the X-men team taking their first trip into space where a mission goes wrong, and Sophie Turner's Jean Grey unlocks her Phoenix Force. While previous installments in the X-Men franchise have touched on Jean Grey alter ego, this film will focus heavily on the Dark Phoenix saga from the comics.
Director Simon Kinberg also shared a little of his thought process on making his directorial debut, an X-Men film focusing on The Dark Phoenix story-line.
“[The film] was so clear in my head, emotionally and visually, that it would have killed me to hand this to somebody else to direct.”
James McAvoy also gave a very interesting plot synopsis for the film:
“This is probably the most emotional X-Men we’ve done and the most pathos-driven… There’s a lot of sacrifice and a lot of suffering. The movie becomes a fight for Jean’s soul as Phoenix threatens to overtake her mind and divide the X-Men, particularly Jean and her mentor, Charles.”

This may come as a shock to most people, but I've always been a bigger fan of the X-Men franchise than Kevin Feige's MCU. There's something about these films that I've connected to more emotionally. 2018 and early 2019 is going to be a great time for me personally, as we'll be getting four X-Men Cinematic universe films starting with The New Mutants in April, Deadpool 2 in June, and Dark Phoenix in November. With Gambit hitting theaters in February, 2019. So yea, I'm jacked out of my mind!
