While some would point to the Maz Kanata scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as being the first flashback scene in Star Wars. However that scene was confirmed to be a force vision that included voices and visions from the past and possibly the future for Rey.
Now it seems that it has been officially confirmed that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be the first Star Wars film to truly have flashbacks to help tell certain story elements. This was confirmed by Entertainment Weekly in a report regarding the image of the Deathtrooper holding a Stormtrooper toy that was released earlier in the year:
In one of the more intriguing photos from Rogue One, we have this image of Deathtroopers prowling on a tundra. One of them is holding what appears to be … an action figure of sorts. The filmmakers didn’t want to explain exactly what’s happening here, but they confirm: yes, that’s a Stormtrooper doll, a galactic version of a toy soldier. And it will have special significance in the story. (Decades later, an abandoned girl name Rey will also fashion a doll for herself — this one an X-wing pilot.)
The doll of course much like Rey's X-wing pilot doll is said to belong to a young Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). Which was seemingly confirmed in a an interview with actor Mads Mikkelsen who plays Jyn Erso's dad in the film when she’s younger, and that the movie jumps back and forth in time. Check out the interview for that right here at Standard.co.uk.
Even the new international trailer that dropped yesterday seems to hint at past and present scenes, which in cased you missed, can check out right here!
As a life long Star Wars fans and a reader of the old and new novels (legends and canon) I've always wanted to see a Star Wars film that used flashbacks. Much like different authors have used this technique in the books, A filmmaker could apply this technique to create a more deeper layered and more interesting story.
I'm excited! What about you guys and gals? Sound off in the comments section with your thoughts on the upcoming film and the now confirmed flashback scenes.
