Last night's epic Marvel Studios panel revealed tons of new and interesting things happening within the Marvel Cinematic universe from Black Panther to Doctor Strange to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! However one of the most over looked reveals of last night was during the Spider: Homecoming panel, and it wasn't the super cool first look footage or the first concept art of Vulture. It was the incredibly strong and groundbreaking casting of Tony Revolori as our new Flash Thompson!
Tony Revolori who starting making a name for himself the past few years with breakout roles in Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel as the character Zero and his scene stealing turn in last year's indie breakout hit film Dope! The surprising thing is how Marvel Studios didn't boost this casting choice during the panel or through the us (the press) over the past couple of months. The reveal came during the super cool footage of Spider-Man: Homecoming when we see a classroom scene with Peter Parker and other classmates when the teacher calls on Flash Thompson to answer a question and that's when Tony Revolori reveals his role.
The reason this casting is so cool, and not to mention refreshing, is the fact that traditionally in the comics Flash Thompson has been a white (caucasian). Also the character is usually stronger, taller, and bigger than Peter Parker; also usually defined as the school jock most popular guy who is usually a jerk/bully to Peter Parker. Interesting enough his character also idolizes Spider-Man. Eventually in Spider-Man comic book lore Flash joins the army and eventually tragically becomes a Venom Symbiote aka one of Spider-Man's greatest villains Venom!
Just to make sure, we made a few calls to our sources at Sony and Marvel along with Tony Revolori's representation last night and it was confirmed that he is indeed playing the Flash Thompson role! His casting is another bold more by Marvel Studios to push racial diversity in Hollywood! Not only in casting, but behind the scenes too!
