Editorial: Thoughts On 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows'
By Aric Sweeny
First off, let me just say that if you’re a fan of the Ninja Turtles franchise, whether it be the classic 80’s cartoon, the 2003 cartoon, or one of the many films surrounding the characters, you will love this movie - simple as that. With so much fan service and deep-cut TMNT characters, there’s no way that fans of the brand won’t find something to enjoy.
That said, however, the average movie fan won’t necessarily appreciate the references, easter eggs and overall film as much as a hardcore TMNT fan will.
Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus on Out Of The Shadows is just plain wrong. Is it a masterpiece worthy of 90%? No, it isn’t; but in no way does this film deserve a 37% on the Tomatometer. Critics today need to understand that different films are made for different audiences, and to not judge each unique movie based on the same criteria. Okay, okay, enough with my thoughts on the RT score…
Looking at the film as objectively as I can, I do acknowledge a couple of big problems; the script is just cringeworthy at times, and there are a few too many characters. Being the TMNT fan that I am, though, these issues don’t negatively affect my opinion.
This is a damn near perfect TMNT movie, even with its glaring problems. Is it my favorite cinematic experience of the year? Absolutely not; but it’s a beautiful blend of the 80’s and 2003 cartoons, which is exactly what I want out of a fun Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
