A couple of weeks ago it was revealed that Sicario 2 was officially happening with a new director Stefano Sollima taking over for director Denis Villeneuve, who is currently prepping to direct the highly anticipated Blade Runner 2 starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling. Along with confirmation on the sequel and the new director, it was also revealed that actress Emily Blunt would not be returning for the follow-up. The new film, which is officially titled Soldado will be following Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin's fan favorite characters this time around.
In a recent interview with The Independent, director Stefano Sollima revealed how his follow-up will be a "different beast" altogether saying:
“It’s absolutely a standalone movie – a completely different story with just two of the characters that you met in Sicario. It’s not a real sequel. The antagonists are now absolutely the main characters.”
The director also went on to say he plans to "take it up a notch", but in a thematically very different way:
“I loved Sicario. I feel the movie was quite similar to my approach so, to me, I’m just shooting another movie. Soldado will be much more cinematic than Sicario was; it’s got an incredible amount of huge action sequences in there. It will be a different journey in the same world. Even the theme is different – it’s not drug dealing, it’s more on immigration.”
Even though it's been confirmed that Emily Blunt's character won't be returning for the follow-up, Sollima does say that the character may make a cameo in the third film which is also in development:
“The idea is to make three anthology movies with some of the core actors and in the same world. The reason that I love [Soldado] is because it’s not exactly a sequel; it’s something you can catch and enjoy even if you haven’t watched the first one.”
Now that all sounds absolutely spectacular and over the moon about this upcoming film and the possibility of a third one. While I haven't seen any of director Stefano Sollima's work, I will be checking it out very soon. I've heard nothing but great things.
So are all you Sicario fans excited about the upcoming sequel? Let us know in the comments section down below, thanks!
Soldado is set to hit theaters sometime next year.
