Open Road Films has just released the first full trailer for director Oliver Stone's long-awaited biographical thriller Snowden! The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, and also stars Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Zachary Quinto, and of course the great Nicolas Cage. Who does seem to give us a nice tour de force performance once every few years, could this be the next one?
The film follows the true story of "a gifted son of a family steeped in military and civil service who enlisted in the Army Reserve as a Special Forces candidate, worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, and acted as a contractor for the U.S. federal government."
The film will of course focus on the controversial figure's theft and disclosure of classified National Security Agency, which everyone's opinions will forever be heavily divided on. Is he a traitor to the United States, or Is he a legendary American hero sacrificing himself for the greater good of the United States? Only time will tell.
I can't wait to to see this film and to see how the world reacts to it, and it definitely ranks very high on my "must see list" of the year. Check out the trailer below and then sound off in the comments with your thoughts.
Here's the official synopsis:
"Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year."
Snowden is set to hit theaters on September 16th.
