Welcome back to our Weekend Box Office Report here @ECMG!
Disney's Zootopia took the top spot this weekend at the box office! The film scored the fourth biggest March opening ever, debuting with a huge $73.7 million. The film has now made $232.5 million globally.
Despite having a massive box office bomb last weekend with Gods of Egypt, Gerard Butler surprised everyone this weekend with his other new film London Has Fallen. The sequel to Olympus Has Fallen opened with an impressive $21.5 million to score a second place finish.
“We’re really pleased with the opening and we think we’re going to leg out well from here,” said Jim Orr, Focus’ distribution chief. “That older demographic doesn’t necessarily rush out on opening weekend.”
Deadpool dropped down to third place, but continues to impress bringing in another $16.4 million, pushing its domestic haul to $311.1 million.
Coming in fourth place over the weekend was Tiny Fey's Whiskey Tango Foxtrot debuting with a lowly $7.6 million. The Paramount produced war dramedy, failed to connect with audiences.
“We were hoping for more,” Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore said. “But Tina’s last movie played to a good multiple and we had a good Saturday, so we have a chance of playing for a little while to a reasonable outcome.”
Finally rounding out the top five is the aforementioned box office bomb that is Gods of Egypt. The $140 million dollar action epic, brought in just $5 million in its second weekend of release. The film has now earned a terrible $22.8 million domestically.
