Joseph Gordon-Levitt's 'Sandman' Adaptation Finally Finds A Writer

March 05, 2016 in MATT O'S ARCHIVE, COMIC BOOKS

By Matt O'Bryant

While Warner Bros. and DC Films are about to see their new DC Extended Universe kick in full gear with the release of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25th, and then in August the Suicide Squad. The studio also has big plans for its stand-alone DC/VERTIGO comics. Which, as of right now are not planned to be connected to the DCEU and will serve as a place for perhaps a more creative, complex, and adult-style comic book films. Warner Bros. will still be producing the films but, New Line Cinema will be handling distribution on such upcoming properties like The Endless and Sandman with other properties coming later down the line.

Sandman will be the first of these graphic novel properties to be brought to the big screen, and today The Hollywood reporter is finally reporting that the creative team of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Goyer and Neil Gaiman, have finally found their writer. Horror writer Eric Heisserer has officially signed on to adapt the DC/Vertigo comic. Joseph Gordon-Levitt will star and direct the big-screen adaptation. Enjoy some of the more finer details from THR below:

“Horror writer Eric Heisserer has been tapped to pen Sandman, New Line’s adaptation of the acclaimed DC/Vertigo comic book that has Joseph Gordon-Levitt on board as director and star.

David Goyer wrote the treatment and a search was conducted to ensnare a scribe to tackle the ambitious translation in what New Line hopes will be a trilogy.

Sandman tells the tale of Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams. The comic book began in the horror realm but quickly made its mark in fantasy and mythology as Neil Gaiman, the author of the series, introduced the Endless, a group of powerful brothers and sisters that includes Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium (as well as Dream).

The book helped establish DC’s Vertigo imprint, won several awards, and its success crossed over into the mainstream.”
