Producer Simon Kinberg Talks 'New Mutants' Film & 'X-Men' Cinematic Universe
By Matt O'Bryant
With the recent mega success of Deadpool, and the impending huge success of X-Men: Apocalypse on the horizon. 20th Century Fox is planning to expand their X-Men cinematic universe over the next few years. One project that has been in development for awhile is New Mutants which is being co-written and directed by Josh Boone. In a recent IGN interview, producer Simon Kinberg gave an update and also revealed the "vibe" they are going for with this X-Men spin-off.
"Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script. They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.
That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it."
Kinberg than went on to talk about the characters that might appear saying its:
“a very deep bench. There’s a long, long list of names, and I’ll tell you some of the names on that list don’t even know. That’s how deep it goes.”
Finally Kinberg revealed that some of the characters from the main X-Men films might cross over.
"Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline X-Men movies. As we are going, I would say it’s likely that you will see some familiar faces."
Kinberg was than asked about one character specifically, that character being Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina aka Magik featured above, Kinberg replied saying "it's a great role" and "would be a great role to cast."
While no release date has been announced, there is a chance we see this film within the next couple of years. Fingers crossed anyways! So what do you guys think? Let us know in the comments down below.
