Welcome back to another edition of our weekend box office update. This weekend marks another dreadful weekend at the box office with two major releases hugely under performing.
Coming in at number one is Neil Blomkamp's Chappie opening with a much lower than expected $13.1 million at the weekend box office. Sony Pictures was hoping for much higher take with modest expectations around $15 to $20 million and some higher end expectations around $30 million for the weekend. The past few weekends at the box office has not been kind to science-fiction films from Project Almanac, Seventh Son, and Jupiter Ascending all opening very weak at the box office.
The biggest disappointment at the box office this weekend was Vince Vaughn's latest comedy opening all the way down in 10th place with an estimated $4.8 million. This marks the lowest opening of Vaughn's career and his 4th film of this decade not to do well at the box office following The Watch, The Internship, and Delivery Man.
Coming in the number 2 spot at the box office this weekend was Will Smith's latest Focus in its second weekend bringing in an estimated $10 million taking its total to $34.5 million. In third is The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel bringing in an estimated $8.6 million. Finally Rounding out the top 5 is Kingsman: The Secret Service coming in 4th place with another $8.3 million bringing is total to $98 million, the film is expected to cross the $100 million mark domestically early next week. Finally in 5th place is Spongebob Squarepants: Sponge out of Water with an estimated $7 million bringing its box office take to almost $149 million domestically.
