Hello and welcome back everyone,
Wow, the weekend box office numbers are in, and it looks like we had two high profile films tank hard. Coming in 3rd place The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending opened with a an estimated $19 million, which was on the lower end of expectations. Considering the hugely expensive film coast more than $150 million to make it is not looking good for the future of The Wachowskis in hollywood. The second box office bomb this weekend was the film Seventh Son coming in 4th place did even worse opening with a terrible $7.1 million. Both films were not really supposed to make a bunch of money, but everyone was kind of hoping they would have performed a little better than this. Both films had been delayed from their previous release dates because of production issues and/or bad tracking numbers due to the terrible word of mouth, and both were deemed Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes.
It wasn’t all bad news at the weekend box office though, one film did great, actually better than expected coming in 1st place was The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water opening with a very strong $56 million which is 75 percent stronger than the previous SpongeBob movie back in 2004.
The Bradley Cooper film American Sniper continued to dominate the box office for the 4th weekend in a row coming in 2nd place with an estimated $24 million. The film has now made almost $300 million at the domestic box office which is amazing! Rounding out the top 5 is another film that continues to have legs at the box office Paddington came in with an estimated $5.5 million.
That's it for this box office weekend update and we can look forward to next weekend’s numbers being huge because of the hotly anticipated films Fifty Shades of Grey and Kingsman: Secret Service.
