Movie Reviews: 'A Most Violent Year'

A Most Violent Year Review

By Jacob Fisher

A Most Violent Year (2014) is a film that focused on the life of a business owner by the name of Abel Morales who’s trying to expand his business in New York City but finds himself in the middle of a rough patch. Somebody keeps taking his oil which lead to him losing money therefore his “American dream” is coming to an end as he knows it. Plus the cops are trying to catch him slip up so they can take him to prison so he’s facing problems from all angles. But luckily he have his wife and kids standing by his side through all the crap that get thrown at him.
Oscar Isaac gives an amazing performance as Abel Morales who’s trying to keep his head above water while all these problems are putting holes in his boat. I don’t think I have ever seen a bad film with Oscar Isaac in it. He always give 101% when he acts and it’s truly magical watching him on screen. He should have been nominated for this movie for best leading actor at this year Oscars.
Jessica Chastain shines as his wife Anna Morales who’s trying to keep her kids and the public from seeing everything that’s happening in their lives. Jessica Chastain is one of my favorite actresses because she’s drop dead beautiful and she just makes you fall in love with her in whatever role she’s playing.
The movie is slower paced which will not be everybody cup of tea but for a movie like this it really allows you an insight look at the true character of Abel Morales. You can see him in the beginning trying his hardest to be the good guy but through his hardships he learn that sometimes to run a business you just can’t be a nice guy. I’m a big Batman fan and there’s a quote that sum up the character of Abel Morales just perfectly, “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."
Overall a very solid watch with two great lead performances with a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack and an amazing view of the mean streets of New York.

5 out of 5 stars
