Movie Reviews: 'Hot Tub Time Machine 2'

Movie Review: Hot Tub Time Machine 2
By, Jake Buchanan

Who’s trying to go back into the hot tub? A lot has changed but the characters have remained the same, but with the exception of John Cusack who didn’t return for this sequel to the 2010 comedy hit Hot Tub Time Machine.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is directed by Steve Pink and also stars the returning Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke as the time traveling trio from the first Hot Tub Time Machine. This time around the main three characters have to use the time machine once again to solve a murder, and basically when they try all Hell breaks loose.

Without a doubt going into Hot Tub Time Machine 2 you’ll definitely need to turn your brain off, because this is one of those “stupid” comedies that if you want to watch it you’ll need to do exactly that… throw all logic out the window. Throughout the entire film Craig Robinson was the stand out among everyone else with his comedic delivery and comedic timing, but Clark Duke also stood out in the film but not as much as Robinson did.

Now what problems I had with Hot Tub Time Machine 2 were basically how obvious it was that they were going for the “shock value” with most of the scenes, and quite honestly it doesn’t do the original Hot Tub Time Machine any justice at all. John Cusack’s character was definitely the anchor to pull all of the insanity back in the first movie, but in this film there was no character to do so even with Adam Scott replacing Cusack’s part as his son. Rob Corddry’s character “Lou” who’s basically the insane party animal is the lead of the film which made him the driving force behind all of the overkill of the unneeded “shock value”.

I understand it’s a comedy but it didn’t capture the nostalgia of what Hot Tub Time Machine was when it came out, and I’ve heard this saying before with comedy movies it's either hit or miss. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 was a definite miss which is why I’m giving it a 1.9/5, because I laughed at some moments but it wasn’t as memorable as the first Hot Tub Time Machine.
