Taking the top spot at the box office was Ridley Scott's The Martian starring Matt Damon bringing in $55 million in its opening weekend. The film marks director Riley Scott's return to form as most critics and audiences alike have been praising the film calling it the director's best work in years.

Adam Sandler's animated family film Hotel Transylvania 2 took second place this weekend with $33 million.  The film has now earned an impressive $90.5 million at the box office in just its second weekend of release.  The film is a huge win for Adam Sandler who hasn't had his usual success at the box office in the past couple of years.

Coming in third place this weekend is one of my favorite films of the year so far Sicario starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin.  The drug trafficking film brought in $12 million this weekend after expanding wide into more theaters across the country.  The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve who also directed Prisoners and Enemy has now grossed an impressive $15 million.

Distributer Lionsgate has a solid hit on its hands with Sicario, and this will continue to hold up well over the next couple of weeks,” says Phil Contrino, lead analyst for “And Sicario will Definitely be in the awards conversation later this fall.

In fourth place this weekend was Nancy Meyers' The Intern bringing in another $11.6 million at the box office.  The film starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway has now brought in an impressive $36.5 million at the box office in just its second weekend of release.
