Box Office: 'Pitch Perfect 2' Some How Out Muscles 'Mad Max: Fury Road' To Take The Box Office Crown!!

By Matt O'Bryant

Hello everyone and welcome back to the box office weekend update,

This weekend movie theaters across the country had a really great turn out by movie goers, for the first time all year we had three films all gross over $30 million at the box office!

Surprisingly despite nearly perfect reviews for Mad Max: Fury Road, with most people even calling it one of the greatest films of all time, Universal's less than stellar sequel Pitch Perfect 2 won the box office crown this weekend.

Universal's Pitch Perfect 2 took the top spot with an estimated $70.3 million, beating Mad Max: Fury Road by over $20 million.

Its been 30 years since a Mad Max sequel has been in theaters and fans were ready, the critically acclaimed, highly anticipated sequel brought in an estimated $44.4 million in its first weekend.  The film directed by returning 70 year old director George Miller is expected to be around in theaters for awhile this summer!  Considering the overwhelming critical response this film will probably have some strong box office legs and if I was a betting man, I would say its overall box office will surpass that of this weekend's champion Pitch Perfect 2 when all is said and done.

Coming in third this weekend and joining the Billion Dollar Club earlier in the week was Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron bringing in an estimated $38.8 million in its third weekend at the box office.  The film in just three weeks of release is now the highest grossing domestic release of the year with an estimated $372 million.

Rounding out the top five this weekend coming in fourth place is the critically panned Reese Witherspoon comedy Hot Pursuit bringing in an estimated $5.8 million taking its two week total domestic box office total to an estimated $23.5 million.

Finally coming in fifth place is Universal's behemoth Furious 7 bringing in another estimated $3.6 million.  Now the film's overall domestic box office for the year is an estimated $344 million second only to Avengers: Age of Ultron.

As always thanks for stopping by and checking out our weekly weekend box office update!
