Director David Ayer Reveals The Importance Of Jared Leto's Crazy Joker Tattoos

By Matt O.

Believe it or not folks, we are only about a month and half away from the release of David Ayer's Suicide Squad film. Now we have covered this film extensively on the site, pretty much from its initial announcement and props have to be given to Warner Bros. and DC Films for keeping a tight lid on the story of the film. We're still not sure who the main villain of the story is.

That being said one of the most controversial and talked about aspects of the film has been Jared Leto's new take on The Joker with many fans going ballistic last year when the "out of control" tattooed up version of this Joker was revealed to the world.

This confused many fans and had people asking all year why? Why? Why? This Joker literally has "Damaged" tattooed on his forehead.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies, director David Ayer revealed that the stupid tattoos and messed up teeth will all have a purpose and a backstory that will make sense once the movie comes out.

"The tattoos tell a very specific story. And eventually people will decipher them and understand what’s going on, but obviously they’re contentious, any time you do something new it’s contentious. There’s very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there’s an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It’s putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world."

It's interesting to note that the director says he is a more "working" class villain. In the past big screen adaptations the Joker has been of higher class and usually very educated.

Suicide Squad is set for August 5th.
