The 'Ben-Hur' Remake's Official Trailer Is Underwhelming & Full Of Cliches

By Matt O'Bryant

MGM and Paramount Pictures have released the first trailer for their ambitious and epic remake of the "untouchable" classic Ben-Hur, a new adaptation of Lew Wallace's classic novel. This remake, which is officially the second remake is being helmed by Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter director Timur Bekmambetov. The film stars Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, and Morgan Freeman.

This trailer is underwhelming and full of dumb cliches! This trailer is the personification of why Hollywood needs to stop trying to remake beloved classics and just be creative and original. If they are so dead set on remaking everything, at least be creative and put a cool spin on it!

While this is just the first trailer for the film and my opinion might change when I see the film in theaters come this August. But damn does this film look bad, maybe mediocre at best. Also to note, is the casting is just plain uninspiring, while I love Toby Kebbell and Jack Huston in their own right, and I'm a total sucker for any Morgan Freeman voice over. This film just looks to be a mistake of epic proportions! Check out the trailer below and sound off in the comments with your thoughts.

Here's the official synopsis:

BEN-HUR is the epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves (Nazanin Boniadi), Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption. Based on Lew Wallace’s timeless novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. Also starring Morgan Freeman and Rodrigo Santoro.

Ben-Hur is set to hit theaters on August 12th.
