Box Office: Insurgent Gives Divergent Series Strength At The Box Office, While Gunman Backfires For Penn

By Matt O'Bryant

Welcome Back to the weekend box office update,

Taking the top spot this weekend was no surprise The Divergent Series: Insurgent showed it could hang in there with the other young adult novel adaptations by taking in an estimated $54 million this weekend.  The sequel to last years Divergent almost equaled its take of $54.6 million nearly a year ago today.

The box office was not nearly as kind to Sean Penn taking on his first ever action role in The Gunman.  The film came in fourth place this weekend with an estimated $5 million at the box office, which is a very low haul for a film with this type of star power in it and just kind of shows us that not everybody can pull off the Liam Neeson style action films.

Coming in second place was last week's number one Cinderella taking in another $34.5 million bringing its total to $122 million.

Through some what good word of mouth Liam Neeson's latest action flick Run All Night managed to scrape up another $5.1 million taking third place in its second weekend at the box office bringing its total to $19.7 million total.

Finally coming in fifth place is the unstoppable Kingsman: The Secret Service one of the biggest hits of the year so far, the film just will not leave the top five.  It brought in another $4.6 million in its sixth weekend in the top five bringing its total to $114.6 million.
